Comfortably take the cable car up the mountain and get off at the summit station at the highest place to be in Salzburg – the Kitzsteinhorn, at 3,029 meters above sea level. The glacier ski area is the highest ski area in the state of Salzburg and offers permanently snow-covered peaks in winter and summer.
And what you can do there – so many activities, it’s almost difficult to decide. We have therefore summarized the absolute highlights for you.
Mountain biking
Mountain biking is very trendy and you’ll get your money’s worth in Kaprun. New trails are constantly being developed and the paths are all well maintained. There are three brilliant downhill trails for downhillers – an adrenaline rush guaranteed. The cable car takes you comfortably to the Alpincenter, where the starting points of the trails are. With this in mind: Let’s shred the mountain!
Climbing on the Kitzsteinhorn
For climbing enthusiasts, there are over 100 climbing routes in the region. The excellent Rettenwand climbing area, for example, can be reached on foot from the Alpincenter on Kitzsteinhorn within 20 minutes. The via ferratas promise fun and action for beginners and advanced climbers. The Zell am See Kaprun Summer Card, which you receive at the hotel, allows you free access to the climbing area with the cable car.
Hiking
The modern cable cars and lifts take you comfortably to the starting points of the numerous hiking routes. Varied hiking trails are waiting for you. Already knew? Here with us you can conquer a real 3,000m peak. The hiking area impresses with its distinctive high alpine flora and fauna. The world’s most modern cable car went into operation in December 2019. You now come directly from Kaprun (768 m) to the Kitzsteinhorn adventure world Top of Salzburg (3,029 m). The ultra-modern cable car offers 32 designer cabins. Once you get on, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Kaprun mountains for 12 km. Attention, only for those with a head for heights! If you are afraid of heights, it will certainly be exciting…
Kitzsteinhorn Explorer Tour
Don’t miss the brand new Kitzsteinhorn Explorer Tour. You start at nine o’clock with a national park ranger at the Kaprun Center. You’ll also experience four different climate and vegetation zones while climbing an incredible 2,261 meters in altitude! But no worries, of course you don’t have to walk the whole way, quite the opposite – there are separate explorer cabins for the cable car available for the tour. In these special cabins the view is even better than the standard cabins. At reception we will be happy to provide you with detailed information about the tour. By the way, you can easily buy the tickets online – ideally a week in advance.
Summit World 3000
Find the highest cinema in Austria, the Cinema 3000, and explore the impressive high alpine world of the mountain with the award-winning film “Kitzsteinhorn – THE NATURE” (duration: 12 minutes). Furthermore, the National Park Gallery will amaze you – immerse yourself in the wonderful world of glaciers!
RELAX AND ENJOY
Culinary delights on the glacier
There is also a lot of culinary delights on the glacier. You can easily eat the calories you burn on the slopes in one of the various mountain restaurants – how about a delicious Kaiserschmarrn? The Summit Restaurant (self-service) is the highest restaurant in Salzburg. The view from up there can’t be beat. At the Alpincenter you will find the GletschermĂĽhle restaurant with traditional cuisine. If you prefer table service to self-service, then you’ve come to the right place. The Alpincenter restaurant (also self-service) is known as a market restaurant. Here you choose your food from various market stalls that offer international cuisine – street food feeling on the glacier! Only here in Salzburger Land.

Skiing & Freestyle
Enjoy 61 kilometers of groomed slopes and discover exciting freeride runs. The glacier ski area is guaranteed to have snow from October to May. 23 modern cable cars and lifts await you for transport to the top. The glacier area offers 3 snow parks and a mighty halfpipe with a length of 150 m and a height of 6.5 m (superpipe). From October to May you can let off steam – so there’s plenty of time to flex on skis and snowboards!
The ultimate winter challenge: Black Mamba
Attention adrenaline junkies! The steepest descent on the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier is called Black Mamba. Does the name sound dangerous? The route is definitely tough. A gradient of 63 percent awaits you on this black slope! It’s a steep descent for one kilometer. All skiers and snowboarders looking for an unforgettable winter adventure have come to the right place here in Kaprun. You overcome 290 meters of altitude during the descent. You start at the Kristallbahn valley station and end the steepest descent in Kaprun at Langwiedboden. We would like to point out that the Black Mamba is not for beginners. At our reception in the ski hotel in Kaprun we will be happy to inform you in detail about all the preparation measures for this unforgettable adventure.
Ski touring and cross-country skiing
Put on the skins and off you go! You can climb the mountain on two excellently secured ski tours as early as autumn. On one route you climb 474 meters (Snow Queen route) and on the other almost 900 meters (Icebreaker route). You can actually cross-country ski on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. On the glacier plateau (2,900 m altitude) you will find a 1 km long cross-country ski trail. Sounds like a short trail, yes. But in autumn and spring there are no cross-country ski trails in the valley. The route on the glacier plateau is therefore unique.

Due to the location of the hotel, we are the ideal starting point for all activities on the mountain. You can charge your e-bike with us and then tackle the Kitzsteinhorn in a relaxed manner. After the bike tour, our bike wash facility is available to you at any time. As a sports hotel, we offer you free yoga lessons so that you can really relax and unwind after an action-packed day on the mountain. Last but not least, our wellness area, the Flying Spa, offers optimal regeneration opportunities after a long day in the mountains.
The alpine sauna in the garden, the hot tub and the natural swimming pool are real oases of well-being. You can warm up properly in our fitness studio before your trip to the Kitzsteinhorn.
